Upgrading to Kallyas v4+

This tutorial will explain you step by step how to upgrade a previous installed Kallyas theme (we’re going to use a v3.6.9) to the most recentĀ 4+ version.

Step #1: Backup#

The first and most important thing is to backuyp your website and database. For this, you can use the Duplicator plugin as you can see in the following image:

After you install and activate the Duplicator plugin, visit the Packages page: Duplicator > Packages and create a new package. You can optionally configure it as you can see in the next image. You can find your database details in the wp-config.php file.

After the plugin finishes scanning and building the archive you will be given the possibility of selecting the type of the script to download:

In this case, you should click on both the “Installer” and the “Archive” buttons in order to download the needed files. You will need these files to automatically restore your website in case something goes wrong when upgrading to Kallyas v4+.

Once you have downloaded the installer and archive files, we can now proceed to updating Kallyas to version 4.0.2.

Step #2: Updating#

You can update the theme in multiple ways. The way we have chosen is through FTP, which means a manual update. To do that, you will have to open an FTP client such as FileZilla or WinSCP and connect to your website. Once you have established the connection, go to the themes directory and delete the existent kallyas theme folder:

Now we can upload the new kallyas 4.0.2 to the server. Whether you use WinSCP or FileZilla, remember to set the content type of the transfer to binary. This will prevent the remote server from altering the line endings of the files transmitted.

Step #3: Reactivating#

After you have uploaded the updated theme folder to your server, go to Appearance > Themes and activate the theme Kallyas:

After you activate the theme Kallyas you will be prompted to run the theme’s updater. This process goes through the posts and pages and other entries from the database that need to be updated to match the theme’s functionality. Since Kallyas v4.0+ comes with breaking changes for all versions prior v4 this process should be run. Click the “Run the updater” button and wait for the process to complete.

There will be cases when the process will not be able to finish. In that situation you can either try to run the updater again or edit your wp-config.php file and add the following “set_time_limit(0);” right after the opening php tag:

When the theme updater process finishes, you will now be able to use the new elements and the new Page Builder Kallyas v4 comes with!
